Frank, Twyla, Tharp, Sinatra

The other night my wife and I saw Come Fly Away, the Twyla Tharp dance evocation of the night club Sinatra, more Luck Be a Lady and Here’s to the Loser’s than Strangers in the Night or It Was a Very Good Year that is spinning on my turntable now.

The show moves. In eighty minutes we hear Sinatra sing all but 2 of the 27 songs and he is backed by  superb live band. To each song Tharp tells us stories with her striking dancers, often very sexy stories. And that’s the thing.

When Sinatra was on stage, he had you. Where else would you think to look? But Tharp’s art and artists are up to the task, not of having us forget Frank (that is not possible) but of having Frank support the dancers and of the dancers show us another aspect of the great singer, one that you know he would have loved.
